Daycare

Rob and signed-up our Bean for daycare yesterday at lunch. In Toronto, the waiting lists are longer than a year now (I've heard around 15 - 18 months) so you have to sign-up to the waiting list while the person who will be going to the daycare is still in utero. Crazy, eh?

We are probably still pretty far ahead of the curve on this one, really, but we were far too scared to take any chances. The potential 'back-up plans' for what we could do if we didn't get into daycare before the parental leave was over were just extremely unappealing.

Anyway, we found two pretty nice spots both located about half-way between where Rob works and where I work. Truthfully, we'd planned on looking close to Rob's work and the fact that it's also close to mine was just a coincidence. There aren't any convenient daycares close to where we live so finding something close to work was the best option. What happens if neither of us are working in 2009 where we're working now? That's a good question! We'll have to reassess the situation if anything changes before then. I think we'll try to get on a waiting list at a centre close to home (even if it isn't the most convenient) just on that chance that suddenly downtown is really really inconvenient.

Talk to you soon,

B.

There are lots of shocking stories out there about the challenge of finding daycare. I think that there really are no "reservations", just positions near the top of the waiting list. You usually need to start daycare sooner or later than you "planned" to match the vacancy's arrival at the daycare.

The "Bean" moniker is really growing on me. Maybe I'll call her/him that from now on - even after s/he has an actual name. I also think it's cute that you capitalise the B. I don't know if you should actually name the Bean Bean because of the Ender series. I wouldn't name a kid after that character.

I was pretty shocked to hear that you have to get on daycare lists that far in advance. I don't know that I would have had the foresight to even think about something like daycare until (at earliest) the last trimester. Possibly not until after birth.

Happy that I'm not the only one who thinks of the Ender series when they hear the name Bean. Still waiting for the film version, which has been in the works for years.

Hee hee!

I had no idea about the Ender series. However, the negative connotation to me comes from Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. They named their daughter Francis Bean. So.. not for us.. despite really enjoying using it as an in utero name.

I overheard a woman use Ziggy, which they got from zygote.
