You know how they say that April showers bring May flowers? I don't know about you, but for me, Spring and Summer mean a lot of showers .. baby showers and bridal showers! For the past few years, I've had the pleasure of co-hosting a few of these events and because of my very close relationship with food, I'm in charge of the menu.
I find menu planning for a party like this to be a bit of a challenge. The guests are usually quite diverse in age, background, tastes, and dietary restrictions. As much fun as it would be to try to wow people with a rendition of Au Pied du Cochon's duck in a can, it just really wouldn't fly. But, at the same time, it's not like it'd be any fun to prepare the same old white bread and cucumber sandwhiches with your Mom's jellied salad recipe, would it? So, then add to this the challenge of time (how much you have without quitting your day job or ignoring your toddler)and money (very little when your spouse is out of work) and you've got your self a fantastic adventure! Or, at least I did about a month ago...
So, this was a baby shower/weekend lunch for my friend Kelly, who's expecting twins. Now, Kelly's a girl who mostly only eats pasta, chicken and veal. Sometimes she'll eat pizza or gelato. Really, if it's Italian, she'll love it but otherwise, you just never know. But I did an Italy theme bridal shower for her and wanted to shake things up. I also hosted a bridal shower brunch for her family in which I served a plethora of quiche. I needed to try something a bit different this time. There were, I think 7 pregnant women in attendance, so it was requested that I avoid no raw milk cheeses, smoked meats, and other such potential hazards. We served coffee and tea and punch but not wine or champagne. I realize that not everyone prescribes to a strict diet when carrying a child, but I wanted everyone to be able to enjoy at least most, if not all of the food available. And it was right around this point in the planning process that I felt like I was on some kind of strange contest where you have to prepare an entire 4 course meal for 30 people using only 5 ingredients.. go!
Ok.. so I think that ws the full list of criteria. With all of that in mind, here's what I settled on:
- Yogurt, granola, and berry parfaits, in wine glasses, with a drizzle of honey
- Quick breads: banana and cranberry walnut
- Some bagels and croissants
- Arugula, tomato, and parmesan salad with balsamic vinaigrette (one of Kelly's favorites)
- Penne, asparagus, green pea, and parsley salad with a lemon vinagrette dressing
- Grilled chicken sandwhiches with carmelized onions, watercress and a chili lime aioli
- Grilled eggplant, roasted red pepper, sauteed mushrooms, romaine and hummus
- A side of pre-sliced provolone was availble if folks wanted to add to the sandwhiches.
- A fruit platter
- Cake! One for each of the twins. Chocolate with chocolate mousse for one, and vanilla with vanilla cream and berries for the other.
Here's what I did: The salad dressings and sandwhich sauces were prepared a week in advance but only applied immediately before serving. The quick breads were prepared earlier in the week. The salads, fruit platter and such were prepared the night before. The grilled chicken and veggies were prepared the night before the party and then the sandwhiches were assembled the morning of. I prepared the sandwhices on baguettes, actually, 6 very long baguette, and then sliced and served on platters at the party. The yogurt parfait were assembled mere minutes before the guests arrived. The cakes were storebought but personalized just before the party.
Here's what I learned: 30 guests will only eat about 3-4 L of yogurt and about 4-6 cups of granola. This is in contrast to the 8L of yogurt and 12 cups of granola that I purchased. Also, I prepared 4 loaves of the quick breads but only about 1.5 - 2 were consumed. Otherwise, I think the quantities were right on. There were some leftovers but a family of 5 demolished them entirely the following day. The cost of the entire thing was about $9 per person. I think I pretty much nailed the timing - but I WAS barbequing the chicken at midnight, in the dark, the night before. This may have lead to slightly overcooked chicken. It was kind of hard to see! I still feel a bit disappointed that I had to resort to purchasing the cakes. But I was also juggling the making of a wedding cake for a wedding the same night as the baby shower. To be honest though, the cakes were delicious and I'm happy to know that I have a new 'go to' bakery in my neighbourhood if I ever need a quick birthday cake fix!
