I Don't Miss Cable

About a week and a half ago, Rob and I cancelled our cable subscription. We thought that our television might have a digital tuner that would allow us to get any broadcasts from the local tv stations, but we were wrong. Our television is entirely void of live broadcasting of any sort. If we want to watch something, on our tv, we have to have some kind of recorded digital copy of it. That means we're watching DVDs or stuff we downloaded.

When we cancelled our cable, there was a part of me that was a bit worried about how that was going to go. I knew that what we watched was already primarily stuff that we'd either downloaded or rented. But still, the idea of not being able to flick on an early morning episode of the Gilmore Girls on Saturday kind of left me fidgetting.

Turns out -- I don't miss it. We're still watching television shows, don't get me wrong. We're mostly up to date with 30 Rock and the Office. I'm catching up on Chuck. We're watching Season 4 of the Wire and have Season 1 of Mad Men should we run out of all of that. What it means for us though, is that really we're only watching if we really want to be and if we really have time to sit, instead of having tv on as background noise or filler. Darn, I wouldn't even mind if I had a night of no tv to sit and read or knit. So far, it hasn't even come to that. Sure, I'm going to miss re-runs a bit, just like I'd miss any other guilty pleasure, like McDonald's fries or Air Supply on my iPod (coffee and chocolate are out of the question; those are necessities not guilty pleasures), but I think I'm going to miss them less than I even thought.

Talk to you soon,

B.

P.S. - you'd think with the cable gone I'd be doing more blogging. you were wrong.
